This vintage Side Valve New Imperial motorcycle would make a great little project for someone looking for an entry into the world of “flat tank” motorcycles. The engine is a 346cc single cylinder, made in-house by New Imperial with 70X90 short stroke. This engine is the one that was fitted to the “semi-sports” 3B New Imperial. This engine wasn’t fitted to the more basic Model 2. The semi-sports version of the Model 6 had shorter handlebars. That was about the only visual difference from the standard version.

The Engine number begins with “C8236”. There are only two other C-type engines known to the expert mentioned below. Neither of those C-type engines are with a frame, making this a unique opportunity to own and re-build a very rare flat tank bike.

The gearbox is a New Imperial 3-speed hand change box. I believe it is a UBT type.

I am led to believe that the frame and engine are almost certainly an original pairing. The catalogue shows this model would have had Druid girder forks. However, Webb forks were an optional extra and are fitted to another Model 6 from 1927.

This frame was used on various models, including Models 3.4 and the 6. It’s a rare frame.

A New Imperial expert reports that he has a Model 6 like this one. As of 2013 (when he wrote to the owner of this bike), he believed that he was the only owner of a Model 6.

This rare survivor is about mostly complete.

You will still need to source parts, including a front wheel rim. Fortunately, the hub is with the project. The previous owner source a nice pair of fuel and oil tanks. Apparently the original tank was completely rotten.

Please see the separate images for the small items. They include two pistons. I have placed the barrel onto the engine for the sake of a photograph. The crank and connecting rod are already installed. It’s missing one of the pistons in the box. Consider that everything will need a thorough going-through However, the parts that make it a Model 6 New Imperial, are there.
