British motorcycle dispatch rider pair of WD side panniers in Khaki brown.

War department panniers for military motorcycles. The pannier frames were standard to all motorbikes bikes and include: BSA, Matchless, Norton, Aerial etc.

These canvas panniers were issued to most British Army Dispatch Riders and were mounted on the rear metal frame to carry all essential items needed by the Soldier.

These particular bags have WD Kite marks stamps inside (Shown in the images). They read: “H & PS Ipswich 1940”. These are high quality reproduction canvas panniers in the colour of brown / khaki. Please note that colour tones are shown different from one screen to another. I can say that these panniers are not the very light sandy version of khaki. They definitely have a hint of brown in them.

Features of these WD canvas motorcycle panniers.

They are made using the correct WW2 pattern for the dispatch rider canvas panniers. They are made from a tough close weave canvas (not webbing) so it’s more water resistant. The straps are all made from 1937 type webbing with 3 strips of webbing on the rear for support and protection.

There are 2 leather corner cups that fit over the top of the frame. They also have the metal clips on the base that also connect to the frame.

The bags are a matched pair as one has a 2″ wide webbing strap that’s 8-3/4″ long and the other one is 4″ with a 2″ Brass buckle so you can adjust the fit.

I have some correct Y-straps available separately. See the WD (stamped 1941) webbing Y-straps for canvas panniers here.

Size for each of the British motorcycle dispatch rider pair of WD side panniers

  • Width 15″ wide at top (38cms)
  • Width 14″ wide at base (36cms)
  • Depth 5″ (12.5cms)
  • Height 14-1/2″ (37cms)

Condition of the British motorcycle dispatch rider pair of WD side panniers

These British motorcycle dispatch rider pair of WD side panniers are in good condition. They are new and never used

They belong to a friend who never used them on a War Department Royal Enfield WD/CO/B rebuild that he did.

One brass buckle is a little tarnished from storage and could do with a clean. The outside of each pannier have some light marks from storage (shown in images). Other than these tiny items, these panniers are ready to go.

Other War Department motorcycle items

If I have anything that is appropriate for motorcycles that are between 1939 and 1945, I have included them on the following page for WD items.
