BSA JM24 Gold Star Prewar & JM23 Empire Star gearbox case, inner and outer covers for foot change motorcycles.
The cast numbers are as follows:
- Outer Cover: 66-3064 D
- Inner cover: 15-4212
- Main casing: 66-3030
From my research the outer cover is key to dating this collection of parts. The “D” signifies that this cover carried over from the Empire Star gearboxes into the prewar KM2 Gold Star models from 1938.
So, here’s what I’ve managed to gather on these parts. If you know otherwise, I would like to hear from you.
66-3064 D nicely polished outer cover in good overall condition. This is a gearbox outer cover for the foot change 1938 BSA JM23, KJM22 and KM models in 1939. The D at the end of the number indicates a few differences. It has strengthening ribs around the kick starter and no external protrusion on the outside (at the front indented area). It has no machined clearance slot for the corresponding 1937/38 narrow kick starts spring. It’s correct that the cover is polished. It will need a very light polish up as it has a few marks.
The main case (66-3030) has a stamp 5 near the cast number. I’m not sure of the significance of the 5. The casing has been painted and the cast number is feint. The case is in decent condition. I think this case was used on many models from 1938 to 1947. So, it’s prewar, WD and post war issue. I think it covered the following models: JM19 through to JM23. KM20 to KM24 and WM20. I don’t think this is a War dept one as, apparently, they had “JHL” next to 66-3030 and I can’t see that under the paint.
If you have the gears, then this is a very nice set of cases for your 1937-1938 prewar Empire Star of Gold Star.
NOTE: there are only a few fixings. They are not necessarily the correct ones as I have used them just to keep the 3 parts together.
