CAV K.U.2 Twin spark magneto C.A. Vandervell – Lucas – Bosch for Douglas / ABC – SOLD

CAV K.U.2 Twin spark magneto C.A. Vandervell – Lucas – Bosch for Douglas / ABC – SOLD

NOW SOLD

CAV K.U.2 Twin spark magneto.

Would swap for a suitable EIC, Bosch or Dixie magneto for a 1915 2-3/4hp Douglas.

CAV magnetos started out as C.A. Vandervell and Co. They made a variety of electrical items including magnetos for motorcycles and cars.  Joseph Lucas Ltd bought the company in 1926. After this, they made components for the motorcycle industry and military aircraft. Bosch merged with Lucas with the CAV products in 1931.

I have no idea if this is a Vandervell, Lucas or Lucas-Bosch. Perhaps someone can educate me?

The serial number is 136624, which is much earlier than the KU1’s that I have seen.

Rotation is clockwise.

There seem to be a few CAVKU1’s and CAV3U1’s, but I can’t find another KU2.

I am advised that ABC motorcycles used CAV magnetos when they didn’t use Thompson Bennett mags. They produced a 390cc flat-twin in 1918. I’m told that the rotation is correct for the ABC. This was produced in conjunction with Sopwith and it was exhibited at the annual Motor Cycle show in 1919.

I also believe that this type of CAV was supplied on the 1912 -on Douglas 3-1/2hp and 4hp models as the rotation is correct.

Bottom line, this is a twin spark magneto. Probably for a motorcycle somewhere either side of 1920. It will need refurbishment and is being offered at a sensible price because of this.

I have done my best to show what is inside. It turns OK.
