Veteran flat tank spares Original rear rack – SOLD

Veteran flat tank spares Original rear rack – SOLD

NOW SOLD

Veteran flat tank spares Original rear rack with front fixing, original number plate, the stay for the rear stand and a pair of tool boxes which are in very poor condition.

The only reason that this original rear rack is for sale, is because I thought it was correct for my little 1915 Douglas 2-3/4 H.P. project. I was very pleased with my purchase, until someone pointed out that it was for a Veteran BSA (around 1912 / 1913).

On further advice, it seems that this is NOT a BSA rack. It just goes to show that we can’t all possess detailed knowledge of every vintage motorcycle when deciding what veteran flat tank spares go with which maker.

However, on checking the basic design (one bar across the middle, the angle of the rear stay and where the stays join the rear axle), it looks like a frame that was supplied to several makers in the teens and early 1920’s.

Please ignore the front bar attachment. I think this may have been a later addition by an owner who might have wanted to carry something heavier than a loaf of bread.

The rear racks on the following look very similar:
1920 Coventry Eagle, Some Connaught motorcycles, 1911 & 1913 Humber motorcycles, 1914 and 1920 Lea Francis, 1913 Royal Ruby. They aren’t the only motorcycles to use this rack design.
I guess it was generally supplied to many motorcycle manufacturers.

Condition of the BSA rear rack

Solid, with the usual surface coating of muck and some oxidisation. All of the mounting holes on the stays are fine. The rack itself is solid. It comes with the very heavy duty front mount and has the fixing plates including the nut.

The number on the number plate is not on the DVLA register (online). However, it does come with a useful number plate that is a little out of shape. The rear stand fixing just needs the clip.

The tool boxes have seen better days and past a useful life. However, they would serve as patterns to be able to make another pair. Having said this, one of them is very poor. The other one is better.

Other Veteran flat tank spares.

While this purchase was a mistake, I occasionally have other veteran flat tank spares for sale. If there is something specific, please let me know what you need. In the meantime, please take a look at the parts for motorcycles made in 1915 and before here. Or take a look at the 1916 to 1930 parts here.
