1936-39, Prewar, Horizontal Amal brass carburettor 6/150

  • Levis 350cc & 500cc OHV,
  • 1000cc Matchless 36/G3,
  • P&M (Panther) 350cc OHV and possibly others.

This prewar motorcycle carburettor is the unusual horizontal type. It was designed for use on 1930’s motorcycles where there was not enough space available for a conventional vertical carb. With the advent of more OHV engines and little done to change the frame or fuel tank, vintage motorcycle manufacturers turned to the horizontal Amal brass carburettor.

From my research, the model 6/150 was used on various British motorcycles in the 1930’s. Specifications varied according to engine capacity as jets and slides can be altered to suit the needs. That still remains the case with this carb. The jet size fitted to this carb is 170. The ones fitted as standard to the 1930’s bikes varied from 130 to 150. So, if you need to reduce the jet size, it’s easy. Buy a new jet from Burlen.

On this horizontal Amal brass carburettor

  • Bore is 1″
  • Jet is 170
  • Throttle valve (slide) is 6/4
  • Float chamber is 1BH

The 1930’s specifications for motorcycles fitted with this carb are:

  • Levis 500cc OHV Model D, Jet 150, slide 6/4, needle position #3, float chamber 64/077
  • Levis 350cc OHV Model A, Jet 130, slide 6/4, needle position #3, float chamber H64/077
  • 1936 Matchless 36/G3 1000cc, Jet 150, slide 6/4, needle position #3, float chamber 22/077
  • P & M (Panther) 350cc OHV, Jet 140, slide 6/4, needle position #4, float chamber 64/077

You might be wondering about the Amal 1BH float chamber. Sorry to say that I can’t comment on how it differs from 22/077 or 64/077. I know it was used on the 1937-52 Condor 500cc OHV and the 1946-52 Motosacoche 500cc. So, perhaps the 1BH was a slightly later version of the original ones fitted to the Levis etc.

Condition of the horizontal Amal brass carburettor

It’s used but not abused. The slide shows the usual amount of wear but it does not wobble in the bore.

The float moves as it should. The float chamber will need to be cleaned a bit more.

It may be missing a spring. They are easy to buy at Burlen.

There is a long wear mark on the outside of the body. I suspect it has been very close to the frame when fitted. The brass / bronze is showing through.
