1926 Royal Enfield Model 190 or 180 vintage motorcycle front cylinder barrel.
Apparently, there were two years when Royal Enfield used cylinder barrels with sideways fins (as on this barrel). Those years were 1925 and 1926 on Models 190 and 180.
It also turns out that the only year that the barrel top was without a primer, was 1926.
So, it’s fair to conclude that this is a front barrel for a Royal Enfield model 190 (or 180) motorcycle from 1926.
I counted the fins on this barrel. there are:
- 10 across the top in a cross-ways direction. (it looks like most JAP engines had 9)
- 8 horizontal fins down the valve side. (Many JAP engines had 8, excluding a 1918 Zenith Gradua which had 7)
- 12 horizontal fins down the drive side.
Like many, I believed tht this must be a JAP front cylinder barrel until a Royal Enfield owner pointed out a few differences. There is one significant difference between this V-twin front cylinder barrel and other Royal Enfield ones. This one does not have a provision for a primer.
The other difference is a modification that I believe has been undertaken. At some point, someone has removed the cast threaded area for the exhaust nut. They have inserted tubing and fastened it to the barrel. Presumably, this was a modification so that it could be used on another machine. I am sure that a flange can be re-attached using the modification.
Dimensions:
- Bore: About 85.3
- Between the left and right studs: 2-3/4″ centre to centre.
- Between the front and rear studs: 3-3/4″ centre to centre.

Good. Apart from the mentioned modification. It’s reversable to an extent. All fins are good and the bore looks pretty good. It will need a light hone. It comes with the two valves. One says “Enfield J” on the top.
