1927 – 1931 Vintage Triumph Model W WS gearbox. Flat tank hand change 3-speed gearbox. It might suit other models of flat tank vintage Triumph motorcycles. However, I believe it’s for the models W and WS.

A bit of background on the Vintage Triumph Model W WS gearbox
The popular 2-Stroke lightweight Triumph LW (Junior or Baby) was outdated and Triumph discontinued that model and replaced it with the 277cc Model W “de luxe” in 1927. De Luxe was dropped and the Model became known as the “W”. The Model W was catalogued for 1927 to 1929, and with a saddle tank replacing the flat tank. The Model WS was catalogued for 1929 and 1930.
- 277cc side-valve, 66.5mm bore X 80mm stroke.
- 3-speed Triumph gearbox.
- All-chain drive.
- About 10,000 W and WS models were produced.
This gearbox design is showing in the 1929 parts catalogue for the Model W and WS.
It might suit other years and models, but having it shown in a parts catalogue certainly helps.
It has a couple of patent numbers cast on the main box. Provisional patent 32166/26 (I guess that’s a clue that it’s after 1926), and Patent 243851.

Condition of the Vintage Triumph Model W WS gearbox
I have made a very short clip showing the gears turning both ways. Just ask and I will see if I can get it to you. The cover only has three bolts. There don’t appear to be any cracks in the case or the cover. There are two areas where there is some minor (repairable damage). I have shown both areas in the images.
It comes with the clutch. Like the gearbox, it is being sold as untested. However, the clutch appears to be complete.
It will need a good clean internally.
