This 1930 488cc Model D Royal Enfield motorcycle engine belongs to a friend.
He has asked me to see if anyone would like to buy it.
I have to say that I am no expert in Royal Enfields. So, I have been guided by what’s written on the cases and then did my own research. I am unsure if the model is generally called a “Model D” just because of the letter stamp on the engine, or whether it should be called the Model 501.
However, I am advised by a RE expert that this is a 1930 488cc Model D Royal Enfield motorcycle engine, Side Valve, for the saddle tank era of vintage motorcycles.
His information is as follows: “Enfield changed to saddle tank late 28 and the letter model IDs started in 1930. In 29 the 500 sv was the Model 501, in 28, the 500 sv was flat tank and was Model 500. Model D started 1930”
Condition of the 1930 488cc Model D Royal Enfield motorcycle engine
Well, you are buying most of the engine. There are no followers or cam gears (as per usual!… where do they all go?)
You are getting a decent engine barrel with good fins and a good set of cases with a clear engine number stamp. The cases have the flywheel, connecting rod and there is a piston inside too. There are valve caps and valves.
So, find some cam followers and cams and you are nearly there.
Other Royal Enfield motorcycle parts:
Aside from this friend’s engine, I have a few parts. Please see the Royal Enfield spare parts pages.
I had quite a bit of trouble tracking down engine / model information. If you aren’t already a member, it’s probably worth joining the Royal Enfield Club as they have the factory records.
