1934 / 1935 Ariel NF 350cc OHV engine in good condition.
Ok, let’s get this out of the way up front. After much research, I couldn’t find an Ariel NF listed in 1938. I think I have worked out that this is definitely a 1934 / 1935 Ariel NF 350cc OHV engine but the engine stamp suggests a 1938 500cc Ariel VH or VG OHV. The stamp begins with “CD” and that is definitely for the 1938 500’s. The 1934 NF 350 number would have a prefix of FA, and in 1935 it was JA.
It belongs to a friend. he bought it for one of his projects a very long time ago. He never used it. It was labelled “1938 / 1939 Ariel 350” and took that info in good faith. I have had the head off and checked the bore dimension. It’s around 72mm, which is definitely Ariel 350cc. By comparison the 1938 VH /VG 500cc models had bore of 81.8.
I will leave the new owner to decide what they will do about the number.
With all of that aside, this is a very nice mid-1930’s engine. Someone has showered it with love as it’s very nice inside.
If you are lucky enough to own one of these NF models, then you have a fairly rare machine. It probably makes sense to take the opportunity to have a complete spare engine while it’s in front of you.
Condition of the Ariel NF 350cc OHV engine
Overall, this engine is good.
It turns over by hand and is smooth. I have not completely taken it apart. However, I think there are enough clues about the engine condition. The bore is nice and clean. The piston is used but seems decent.
The head and barrels fins are good. It has the rare Ariel NF 350cc OHV engine timing cover. I removed the timing cover to show you that it has the oil pump and one magneto sprocket.
I removed the rocker boxes. The rockers are installed and move freely. The cylinder head is fine. I have shown an image of the combustion chamber. The valves are fitted. There is one small chip in the inside lip where one rocker box fixing is. Fortunately, the machine screw holds tight and the chip is on the inside lip. That’s about the only thing that I can see of issue. It’s a very minor issue. It even comes with the push rods.
The cases are in decent condition and without any major dings. The drive splines and thread look fine too.
NOTE: Please make sure that you tighten the head bolts to the correct torque. I have only lightly nipped them up.
