Hobday bro’s London “Rival” motorcycle carbide acetylene rear light lamp for early motorcycles.
This is one of my more unusual little real lamps for flat tank motorcycles. It still has the small P-clap to the side for attachment to the motorcycle frame. The red rear lens appears to be original. Unlike the other small carbide / acetylene lamps that I have, there is no clear side window to check on the gas flame. The chimney is a neat one and still bears the maker’s name and model of the lamp. I can’t quite make out the maker’s name, but it looks like Hobday. The model of the lamp is clear enough – “Rival”.
The lower section unscrews, presumably to allow access to light the wick. The wick is not fitted but would be attached in the central hole. I presume the two stylish C-shaped holes in the base are to allow air in.
Overall, this is a very stylish little carbide acetylene lamp that would have been mounted to the frame of a vintage, veteran, or antique motorcycle.
If you are looking for something different for your flat tanker, then this might do the job. Or you could just add it to your collection of rear carbide lamps and have it as a talking point.
Looking for other rear lamps? Please see my selection of acetylene / carbide lamps. I have burners, front lamps and more rear ones. The lamps include more Lucas #344 nickel plated carbide acetylene rear tail lamps. There are also a variety of Miller and P& H lights, together with more unusual Westwood “bullet shaped” lamps and one made by Rival. I also have some Miller Rearlite nickel plated, port and starboard, acetylene lamps. Please look through the current selection of lamps that are available here
