for a WD 3HW

Triumph Pre Unit RIGID frame Triumph WIDE RATIO 4-speed gearbox for WW2 single cylinder motorcycles & TRW Twin.

I am informed that the sequential number shows on records that it was issued to a war dept Triumph single. Likely a 3SW or 3HW. It’s more likely that it was issued to a 3HW as the 3SW was made between 1938 and 1941. The 3HW was built in the “new” factory after 1941. I think this box is around 1944. You can just see some Army-green pain on the clutch arm. While that is no proof of War Dept use at all, it’s a reasonable clue.

If you feel the need for some low-down grunt, then it would suit a T80 too.

Of course this Wide Ratio pre-unit Triumph gearbox may also suit later twins such as scramblers, trials or ISDT type competition motorcycles. Triumph Bonneville, T110, T100, TR5 Trophy, TR6 Trophy etc. or even a Thunderbird 6T if you fancy it.

It’s an original Wide Ratio gearbox for a rigid Triumph. This one is correctly stamped with “WR” on the same face as the sequential number: TE67939. Please come and open it up for yourself and do your own inspection. It is being sold as a gearbox that hasn’t been tried and tested. It turns fine but I just haven’t used it myself.

The main case is the one with cast number T264A. It comes with a used 17T sprocket. The cases do not have any cracks. In fact, the frame mounts are good. The lower sections of the inner and outer cover have suffered a bit from corrosion, but without holes. The clutch arm moves. The gear indicator moves freely (so that may mean something is not connected inside). It turns freely but is being sold as a gearbox that requires a rebuilt. I haven’t opened it up. There is one machine screw on the cover that has been stripped.

Wide Ratio gears changed over the years. In 1938, the WR gears had 1 less tooth than the ones issued in the 1950’s.

The wide ratio gears that were installed from around 1938 were as follows:

(These were in direct replacement of their equivalent gear and all the others were standard)

  • Main HIGH 27T T465
  • Main 2nd 18T T467
  • Layshaft HIGH 17T T466
  • Layshaft 2nd 26T T468

By comparison, the wide ratio gears that were installed between 1950 and 1954 were as follows:

(These were in direct replacement of their equivalent gear and all the others were standard)

  • Main HIGH 28T T969
  • Main 2nd 19T T968
  • Layshaft HIGH 18T T971
  • Layshaft 2nd 27T T974

I have a few standard Triumph Pre-unit swing arm gearboxes (rigid frame and swing arm ones) but this is the only wide ratio one that I have.
