Vintage car Austin Morris Smiths speedometer 60 mph with trip
This original Smiths speedometer is more likely that it would have been supplied for an early motor car and may have been used on motorcycles. Similar Type A speedometers appear to have been supplied for prewar Austin and Morris cars. I suppose you could fit it to a prewar motorcycle. I have no idea how accurate it would be though.
Pre-1935? Probably. As I understand it, 1935 was a definitive year with British speedometers. 30 MPH became an important speed limit and the makers then marked 30 mph on the dial with an indicator line in a different colour. This speedometer doesn’t have that 30 mph indicator line. Logic suggests that it’s pre-1935.
Does it work. Well, it turns when I spin the square pin by hand. I attached a small tube to the square pin drive and spun it. The needle moves. However, I have no idea if it works correctly.
The speedometer has a fairly standard simple bezel, as opposed to ones that had a patterned edge. The thread on the cable mount is fine.
The casing has the Smiths logo and the body has a serial number.
Dimensions
- Outside diameter of bezel: 3-3/8″ (about 86mm)
- Outside diameter of speedometer casing (to fit clamp or mount hole): 3-3/16″ (about 80mm)
Condition of the Smiths speedometer
This Vintage car Austin Morris Smiths speedometer is in used condition. It works when I turn it by hand. But I have not used it with a vehicle to check calibration. I have only run it slowly by turning the little red tube by hand and the needle moves.
It has a nice used patina without looking too worn. This offers the option of leaving it as it is, or having it restored to pristine condition.
The glass is in good condition and the is nice, although a little tarnished in places. The main speedometer casing has marks from fitment.
I can’t make the trip re-set.
