Vintage motorcycle Scott 3 Speed hand change gearbox. Possibly Wide Ratio for sidecar motorbikes. Antique motorcycle transmission for a Scott Squirrel.
I currently happen to have a standard 3-speed hand-change Scott motorcycle gearbox for sale, along with a similar gearbox to this one. So, if you want of those, please see the Scott items. However, this gearbox would appear to be a Wide Ratio version. I have to say that I am not certain. The “W” after the sequential number, is my only clue.
If you have a Scott outfit / sidecar, or if you are preparing a 6-Day Trials / Competition Scott, then this is probably a good opportunity to get a suitable gearbox.
I think the 3-speed hand-change gearbox ran between 1924 and 1940. As I am no Scott motorcycle expert, I believe this to be the case. Let me know if you think otherwise. Here’s a little info on Scott models that utilised the early 3-speed gearboxes that I have found after some light research.
- 1924 – 1st 3 Speed gearbox on a Sports Squirrel
- 1925 – 1st 3 Speed gearbox on a Super Squirrel
- 1926 – 1st 3 Speed gearbox on the Scott Flyer
- 1926 – TT models have the 3-Speed gearbox
- 1927 – 1st 3 Speed fitted to the Flying Squirrel.
I would say this. This particular Scott 3 Speed hand change gearbox is very slightly different to my other one with the number ending in “W”. The gear linkage is different. On the other one, the shaft is higher up in the body and there is a raised section for the full length. On this one, the shaft is set deeper into the body and there is no raised area for the shaft. In addition, the other one has the usual gear linkage. On this one, there is a plate with notches got the gear selection. There are various other small differences.
I can’t directly compare the stamped gearbox numbers because this one has light damage in that area. The number is shown in the images and there is a small stamped “5” close to it. If it’s any help, the number on one of the gear shafts looks like “KF 241”.
Condition Scott 3 Speed hand change gearbox
If you are in the UK and want to come along to check it over, you are very welcome. The casing and front cover seem fine and free of damage. The gearbox turns fine. I have removed the front cover to reveal what is available inside.
Apart from the photographed damage on the stamped corner of the cover, there doesn’t seem to be any other issues. The are no weld repairs and the gears seem OK. The front cover does not have any fixing bolts.
This is being sold as a gearbox that needs a rebuild and may require other parts.
