Working Vintage Model A Smiths speedometer 60 mph with fluted edge to the rim.
I am not entirely certain that this speedometer would have been supplied for veteran (pre-1916) motorcycles. I somehow doubt it. It’s more likely that it would have been supplied for an early motor car and may have been used on motorcycles.
Pre-1935? Probably. As I understand it, 1935 was a definitive year with British speedometers. 30 MPH became an important speed limit and the makers then marked 30 mph on the dial with an indicator line in a different colour. This speedometer doesn’t have that 30 mph indicator line. Logic suggests that it’s pre-1935.
This is a working vintage Model A Smiths speedometer . I have seen very few of these Model A versions and, until now, I haven’t seen one with a silver face. Usually, they have a black face.
It has the original silver face, with mileage count and the Smiths logo. Similar ones had black faces and were marked “Type A” just under the 30 mph. This one has “A – 619.350” stamped just under the centre of the needle. The bezel is nicely fluted. Others had a flat flange, more suited to a vintage car.
The speedometer drive cable exits the casing at the lower end of the speedometer and is a square-end drive.
Dimensions
- Outside diameter of bezel: 3-5/8″ (about 92mm)
- Outside diameter of speedometer casing (to fit clamp or mount hole): 3-3/8″ (about 86mm)
NOTE: the photos show a little red wire coming out of the speedometer drive. It’s not a wire. It’s just a piece of tube that I pit over the drive to check that the speedometer works. It does work when I spin by hand.
The speedometer is stamped with many country patent numbers and it has the normal Smiths stamp on the case.
Condition of the Vintage Model A Smiths speedometer
This Vintage or Veteran Smiths speedometer is in used condition. It works but I have not used it with a vehicle to check calibration. I have only run it slowly by turning the little red tube by hand.
It has a nice used patina without looking too worn. This offers the option of leaving it as it is, or having it restored to pristine condition.
The glass is in good condition and the decorated bezel is nice, although a little tarnished in places. The main speedometer casing has marks from fitment.
