New Imperial lightweight motorcycle gearbox around 1922 – 1924.

That’s my best guess. The gearbox on a 1920 lightweight New Imperial motorcycle is fitted with a completely different box, from my research. I have found a 1924 300cc Model 3 Light Tourist with a very similar gearbox, but it’s slightly more advanced. So, I’m suggesting that this is an early 1920’s lightweight NI gearbox. I’m no expert, so please seek guidance before you buy if you aren’t sure.

The good news is that this is a nice, complete gearbox. The cover is missing a few fixings. Other than that, it appears complete. It even comes with the frame clamps and correct domed nuts. It has the original “New Imperial” brass identification plate and it is stamped with a number. It looks like it reads “470”. But, there may be a number in front of that.

It has the patent stamp: 141152/19. from this, we can deduce that it’s not before 1919.

The gears move and turn nicely, I have opened it up and shown the gears without removing everything. The gears look good. The thread and keyway on the drive side look fine too.

Bottom line, this is a nice little New Imperial lightweight gearbox for motorcycles around 1922 – 1924. You will need to make a new gasket for the front cover. It’s a bit shabby.
