Veteran Douglas flat tank motorcycle engine barrel. 61mm dia

Barrel #2

I have a couple of early Douglas Veteran (and probably vintage) engine barrels.

I’m no Douglas expert, so I am open to being educated. There are probably enough clues here to suggest that this is a Veteran Douglas motorcycle barrel dating from around 1913 through to possibly 1919.

Here’s my thinking:

  • There are less fins than later ones.
  • This barrel has an S cast into it. That may refer to the Ladies Model S from 1913, but it could just be any old cast number.
  • The bore dia is 61 mm which matches the barrels that were bought into production in 1913 for the 340cc engines with their then standard 60mm stroke.
  • In 1913, Douglas returned to a curved inlet manifold with gland nuts.

If I am correct, this barrel should apply to the 349cc engines in the Models N, O, P R, S (1913), T, U, V, W, X (1914), W and ED (1915-1919).

Models S and X were the lovely open-framed Ladies Models.

Don’t take my word for the model(s) that this barrel is for. If you have any doubts, please show the pictures to a Douglas expert.

Condition: It has a few chipped fins but it’s no disaster zone. The threads are good and the bore appears to be standard diameter.

By the way, I have a few other early Douglas parts including some empty engine cases, a crank, 3 x pairs of connecting rods and another barrel. They are available at the moment. Please look through my other listings.

This is barrel #2 of two.
